WASHINGTON, D.C. Oct. 24 (DPI) – The Washington Post is leading today with the release of a letter by 30 ultra-liberal House Democrats – including the once-sensible Jamie Raskin – calling for the US to engage in direct negotiations with Russia to end the war.
Quite apart from the curious timing of such a statement – less than two weeks before another hotly contested election day – the remarks send a shockingly we-don’t-care message to the Ukraine government, whose armies are prevailing over Russia’s depleted and poorly reinforced forces in eastern Ukraine.
The relatively small number of House Democrats also went after the Biden administration to “rethink its Ukraine strategy” after eight months of warfare that’s been sustained, in part, by weapons and supplies provided by the US and its allies. To many observers, the West’s slow-but-steady support has proven a key factor in Ukraine holding off Moscow’s much larger but clumsier war machine.
Most of all, though, more than 4200 reader comments today were universally shocked by the progressive Democrats’ view that the US should negotiate with Vladimir Putin, especially now that he’s proven himself a Hitler-level war criminal and an incompetent commander.
The most popular comments linked to the report, in order:
I’d expect calls to sell out Ukraine from the MAGA-heads, but this is just pathetic.
The Ukrainian foreign minister said it best. “We will negotiate the peace after the war.”
Apparently willing to cede someone else’s territory for “peace in our time.” Not a good look.
I hate to say it, House Liberals, but that is just sick.
Unbelievable. Putin and Russia are guilty of a multitude of war crimes in this unprovoked invasion of Ukraine and you want to negotiate with them? Add to that, Russia is on the ropes and is getting manhandled by Ukraine–why would we ever negotiate with them? Plus, it’s not really our place to negotiate the future of another sovereign nation. We should continue to give Ukraine all the support it needs to knock Russia out. So frustrating.
I’m a liberal and you guys are wrong on this and giving support to Putin republicans. There is nothing to negotiate. Russia cannot keep any Ukrainian territory. Win the war.
It defies belief how anyone could write a letter like this without acknowledging separation of children from families, executions, torture, deliberate bombing of residences and places of sanctuary, threats of mass destruction, threats against NATO members, etc.
If Putin gets something out of this war, he will attack more countries. If he appears to lose, he is dead. He is like hitler. He will regard negotiations as weakness.
Russia must be crushed and their government and perhaps their society must collapse. Then, they can start again, after the war reparations.
