As Bloomberg Eyes Run, Democratic Candidates Are Uneasy, But Many NYT Readers Pleased

WASHINGTON, D.C. Nov. 11 (DPI) – Mike Bloomberg would snatch much of the moderate vote in a general election, and the left-leaning field of Democrats responded to news of the former NYC mayor’s likely entry in the 2020 presidential race with bring-him-on bravado. “Sorry, you an’t going to buy this election,” said Bernie Sanders this weekend.

But NYT readers – recognizing the practical issue of getting Trump out of office – posted comments suggesting that a Bloomberg candidacy is a good idea.

Some popular comments lament the appearance of “another rich white guy” in the 2020 race, but the broader sentiment accepts the need for a moderate candidate who is a proven and competent manager.

The most popular among nearly 1,500 comments on NYT.com this weekend:

As a former NYCer, having lived through a number of administrations, Bloomberg was by far the most effective mayor and def. my favorite based on his pragmatism, his candor, his no-drama demeanor and, more personally, his efforts to learn Spanish no matter how mangled his efforts were. He displayed true heart and it always seemed he was trying to do his best for the city and its residents from all walks of life. He wasn’t without faults or misteps, but he was always transparent about his plans and dealings and I never had the sense he was in anyone’s pocket. Unlike Trump, Bloomberg is the real deal – self-made, generous, intelligent and intellectually curious. His focus on gun-control and the environment combined with his economic acumen makes him a real threat. I am now living in Ohio where I think a Bloomberg platform would play really well, especially on economic issues. Go, Mike, Go!

I personally love Warren’s platform. But I realize that she just goes too far, too fast, for many Americans. I travel around America for work and my interactions lead me to conclude that in a Warren/Trump battle, Trump comes away with 4 more years. Let’s get Trump out of office and spend the next four years reversing all the damage he’s done, roll back his devastating climate agenda, and then take steps toward Medicare for all. We will get there – eventually.

Mike will be a great candidate for the Democrats. IMHO, he is the only one who can go toe to toe with Trump. Unlike Trump, he is a self made Billionaire. He has governing experience and a very good administrator. He cares about the most important issues of our country, i.e, climate change, health care, gun control…On the other hand, Warren and Sanders are unelectable and Joe Biden does not have the energy to withstand Trump’s attacks. Besides, Mike would, not only get the democratic vote, he will get by far most of the Independent votes as well as those Republicans who are disgusted with Trump but will not vote for an ultra left such as Warren or Sanders. BTW, it is very clear that Joe Biden is not going to make it. Realistically speaking, Mike is the only choice to save us from Trump. Otherwise, expect another 4 years of Trump and total loss of our Democracy.
