WASHINGTON, D.C. Jan. 7 (DPI) – Washington Post columnist David Ignatius this morning asked the same question millions of Americans did last night: Why did the Capitol Hill Police and various federal law-enforcement agencies allow Trump supporters to attack and occupy the US Capitol?
The prevailing answer this morning is that Capitol Hill law enforcement, for reasons of race and ethnicity and political outlook, were sympathetic to the Trump mob and simply allowed their attack to happen.
At this writing the attack led to four deaths, the destruction of property at the Capitol, and the evacuation of lawmakers on the day they were charged to certify the states’ electoral decisions. Down the street yesterday morning Donald Trump encouraged the mob to assault the proceedings.
Americans were stunned, not simply by the attack but by the lax law enforcement that enabled it. And the comments attached to Ignatius’s column reflected it. The most popular:
There is video of officers removing the barriers to let WHITE “protesters” onto the Capitol grounds. There is a picture of Cap. Pol. Officer 1828 taking a selfie inside the building with a WHITE “protester.” The “protesters” were white. That is why the cops weren’t ready, except they were as ready as they wanted to be.
This is no great mystery, David. These protesters were older and of a decidedly lighter complexion than your BLM activists. Also explains the “remarkable discretion” law enforcement exhibited.
There must have been many Trump enthusiasts among the so-called security forces who so haplessly defended the Capitol. Foreseeing this mayhem was a no-brainer. The preparation for it was lax to the point of collusion. The inadequate response warrants a thorough investigation and punishment for those who conspired in the insurrection.
