WASHINGTON, D.C. Jan. 12 (DPI) – Even once-stalwart supporters of Donald Trump – including pundits like Wall Street Journal columnist Gerard Baker – have finally decided to write off the man, declaring that events of last week have no precedent in modern American politics.
Baker’s column today rang with some contrition, and he admitted that whatever conduct of the American left in recent years, there’s no excuse or justification for Trump’s obvious role in he Capitol Hill riot that left four dead.
“Now is the time,” Baker wrote, “when conservatives especially need to look beyond the frustrations of what often seems like an unlevel moral playing field and acknowledge an unequivocal, unqualified truth: The president’s behavior last week was uniquely and unforgivably iniquitous. And the decay goes deeper. It cannot be excused by citing counterparts on the left.”
Readers largely agreed.
The highest recommended comments attached to Baker’s column:
“It’s a measure of the depravity to which our national political conversation has fallen that however bad one side’s latest transgression against norms, morality or the law, there’s always something it can point to that the other side did first.”
Wrong is wrong.
Saying that someone else committed a crime previously does nothing to lessen the seriousness of a crime being committed again.
Call me crazy, but I hold the President of the USA to a higher standard than rabble rousers (e.g, Antifa, BLM, QAnon, Proud Boys, and the like).
Higher Standard
Totally agree. I believe it was Friday night when his Twitter was deleted. Reports were coming in that he was furious, looking for ways to hit back. He tried to tweet from a different account, but they blocked that too. His office said he was evaluating how to fight back, maybe an executive order or create his own social media platform, etc. Covered breathlessly by Fox.
Think about that – America is in the midst of a pandemic, millions of people out of work, the economy holding on by the thinnest of threads, carnage in the capital, extremists in the senate with zip ties trying to hang Pence, schools are still shut, the vaccine rollout is hitting delays…
And… The President of the United States is spending his time trying to get back into his social media account because he got locked out. Like some deviant teenager. I half expected him to tweet from a friends account. Would be funny if it weren’t reality.
That’s how low we’ve sunk with this selfish man.Yes, the left does bad things too. Conservatives are supposed to believe in objective moral truth.
Finally someone with some integrity!
Trump and his loyalists were lying to their constituencies, telling them there was a chance the election could be overturned on Jan 6th, if only Mike pence and the GOP displayed courage. Of course, that was all a lie, used for fundraising purposes and to rally the base and it was WRONG!
Josh Hawley and Ted Cruz’ selfish, unethical and dangerous decision to object to those electoral votes was wrong. the GOP is supposed to support STATES RIGHTS!
Trump then publicly called his VP a coward, and directed an angry mob his way. The man and his family are now getting death threats. That’s wrong!
Trump directed an angry, deadly mob to attack congress while they were literally in the act of formalizing the nomination of his political opponent. Flagrantly undemocratic, un-American, and WRONG!
This needs to be spoken loudly & unequivocally by the GOP!
