WASHINGTON, D.C. Oct. 19 (DPI) – It took an Op-Ed by the chair of the Federal Election Commission today to explain a straightforward, responsible – and newsworthy – ruling by Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh, a clear sign that the news pages of The New York Times still are not ready to give good press to political opponents.
FEC Chair Ellen Weintraub wrote about as un-opinionated as op-ed as has ever appeared in The New York Times, outlining – as a news reporter might have – the Supreme Court ruling, led by an opinion prepared by Kavanaugh, that enables stronger enforcement of election laws again foreign entities.
Kavanaugh ruled that non-US individuals who try to influence US elections have no Constitutional rights to free speech simply because as non-US citizens they have no Constitutional rights. The headline, “Justice Kavanaugh Unlocked Ways to Fight Foreign Influence.”
The op-ed included no comment board, where readers might have been able to ask why such a report wasn’t covered as a news story last summer, when the decision was handed down.
As such Weintraub’s op-ed highlighted the odd fact that the NYT doesn’t cover the news the way it did 10 or 20 years ago.
