WASHINGTON, D.C. Nov. 2 (DPI) – Tuesday’s midterms, by most accounts a referendum on Trump’s popularity, look like a slam dunk for Democrats, who are confident the American electorate has had enough of the Republican majority.
And while all indications – money flows, polls and media sentiment – suggest that the GOP will lose control of the House of Representatives, there are still some doubts about a landslide for Democrats.
Paul Theroux, the curmudgeonly Harvard-educated novelist who currently lives in Mexico, wrote an op-ed in The Washington Post today saying there uncounted “closet Trump supporters” out there and that polls should not be trusted:
A blue wave is predicted for the midterms. I’m not convinced of it. Trump proved most polls wrong for a reason. In Britain, a shy Tory is someone who will not reveal his or her intended vote to a pollster. There are many loud Trumpers, but there are shy Trumpers, too. So I distrust polls more than ever, especially as — after Trump won, and voters became more vocal — I discovered that many in my large and lovable and liberal-minded family, and maybe yours too, revealed themselves as shy Trumpers.
Theroux’s op-ed generated more than 2,300 comments from readers, many of whom wanted to disabuse Theroux of any notions that the backlash against Trump won’t happen. The most popular comments:
Anyone who supports Trump has something wrong with their intellect, their character, their patriotism, or some combination of all three.
By means of a half century of The Southern Strategy Republicans have become the party for traitors, racists, Nazis, state-sanctioned child abuse, rapists and other sexual criminals with Trump’s support. Traitors, racists and Nazis are literally enemies of America against whom we have literally waged war.
Republicans are overtly anti-education, anti-science, and anti-reason, and have been so for some time now. There is absolutely no way to get through to them because of it.
Republicans are unprincipled people. Everything they’ve shrieked about for years and decades they easily tossed aside– fiscal and personal responsibility, balanced budgets, sanctity of marriage, family values, law & order, compassionate conservatism, “character matters” and even Jesus– all meaningless and false and inauthentic.
Republicans are lazy people. Complaining about taxes and the ACA for years, and when their moment came they had done absolutely no work. Their voters reject subsidized job training in favor of welfare while they wait for coal jobs that aren’t coming back.
By their own words they show they are no longer about the common good nor the general welfare. They are only for their base– about one third of the population, and the worst America has to offer: unprincipled, dishonest, and more than willing to cheat.Wow. I thought there might be something wrong with white nationalist authoritarianism. But now I see. It’s really okay. Thanks, Paul Theroux. I feel so much better now.
Gee, my insurance is going up 9% from an already unaffordable $750/month with a $5500 deductible (1 person. HMO. crap care.) My food and gas cost more.
My 2 kids in state university cost $62,000/year.
My husband’s heart meds are $460/month on Medicare.
The national debt has exploded and people are shot in church, temple and parking lots.
And I dont know if the upcoming election will be legit.
Love your books, Paul, but anyone who supports Trump is stupid, racist or ultrawealthy.
