WASHINGTON, D.C. Nov. 5 (DPI) — More than 500 readers today sounded off on The New York Times site after the paper posted its description of the hazing episode involving players of the Miami Dolphins football team. But one comment – with a litany of credible information on the background of one of the players — provided much-needed context to the matter, in which one player, Richie Incognito, allegedly bullied fellow offensive lineman Jonathan Martin.

This article is much too kind to Incognito. He was suspended twice by Nebraska (and also convicted of misdemeanor assault while at the school), and then transferred to Oregon, where he was later dismissed. While on the Rams, he was known as a dirty player who racked up a ton of penalties. He head-butted two players on the Titans, got into an argument with his coach, and was soon dismissed from the team. And Tony Dungy and Scott Pioli both said that Incognito was on the teams’ “do not draft due to character” lists. This isn’t an issue of “culture” or “hazing.” This guy has serious issues.

The post suggests that – contrary to the conclusions of many readers and journalists — the incident is less a reflection of the National Football League than it is of an individual harassing and intimidating another player.
