Impeachment Motion Heading Soon to Senate; No Sign of Break in Partisan Divide

WASHINGTON, D.C. Dec. 3 (DPI) – Reader comments across news sites reflect the rock-hard divide between Americans who support Trump’s impeachment and those who still support him, as a Democrat-controlled Congress sends its case – in a matter of days – to a Republican-controlled Senate.

The consensus among most pundits remains that Trump will survive the effort to remove him from office, despite credible evidence that he put his personal political interests well ahead of the nation’s security, a blatant violation of his oath of office.

It’s been widely confirmed that Trump tried to withhold military aid to Ukraine in an attempt to get the Ukrainian government to investigate Hunter Biden’s role at a Kiev-based natural gas firm. Days of testimony last month provided a strong case, but sitting Republicans remain unwilling to break ranks with the President.

Conservative readers remain largely isolated on sites such as WSJ.com, where the highest recommended comment today was sarcastic and dismissive:

_The sun rose in the East.
_I didn’t win the lottery.
_The Democrats thought Trump should be impeached.

Today was full of surprises.

The NyTimes.com site saw hundreds of reader comments, the most popular of which were grave and sincere in tone:

The speed and care that Schiff and the Intelligence Committee are applying to this process are admirable. The American people need to fully grasp that giving aid to Ukraine is not like giving out Hallowe’en candy to children: that aid we supply for Ukraine’s defense bears directly on American security here at home and our commitments to our European allies to keep Russian aggression at bay. By prioritizing his own political power over the safety of the homeland, the President broke the law, betrayed his oath of office, and betrayed the trust of the American people. He must be impeached.

What’s missing from the report are the corroborating documents plus the testimony of the political appointees. Mr. Trump (and his lawyers and defenders) don’t get a special pass on fulfilling their legal obligations. SCOTUS must act expeditiously to intervene in these acts of obstruction. This is no longer a political disagreement – is is one that strikes at the very foundations of our governance. If they knew, most Americans would be shocked at the contemptuous behavior of this administration and its nondisclosure of incriminating documents. Even folks who rarely give credence to mainstream reporting would be shocked at the nonchalance in which this administration refuses to fulfill its duty to release documents and have cabinet level members of the administration testify before Congress, even on the most mundane of matters.

The preface to this report reads like it was written for the ages. the founders, could thy read it, would surely be satisfied their revolutionary notion of a sovereign accountable to the people has found in Representative Adam Schiff, with his mild manner and fierce commitment to patriotic duty, a superb defender.
