Trump Tweets “Looking Forward” to Jobs Number Before It is Released; Many Readers Put Off

WASHINGTON, D.C. June 1 (DPI) – Donald Trump early this morning tweeted that he was “looking forward” to the 8:30am release of the monthly jobs report, a surprising move that came across to many readers as both stupid and illegal. “He should be indicted” for tipping economic data before its release, wrote one poster on NYTimes.com this morning.

The jobs number, produced by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, is released every month and reports on job growth and the general unemployment rate. It hits traders screens at 8:30am one Friday per month. According to today’s data, the US economy generated 223,000 new jobs in May, and the unemployment rate fell to 3.8 percent, the lowest in 18 years.

Somewhat remarkably, despite all of Trump’s habits of prevarication and generally making things up, Wall Street and people continue to believe and put faith in the government-generated data.  At some point, as long as the Great Liar remains in power, questions about the veracity of government data could well come into question.

Trump was reportedly informed by his economic aide Larry Kudlow of the rosy economic data last night, prior to its release this morning. Trump couldn’t resist commenting on the data before it was published at 8:30am, a move that the NY Times said “broke protocol” from previous administrations.

But readers, even on conservative news sites like WSJ.com, used stronger language.  “He has absolutely no respect for the law,” wrote on WSJ.com poster.  “Revealing inside info, including gov’t statistics before their official release, is illegal.   Yet we’re supposed to respect him for being President?”

Comments on The New York Times were even less forgiving. Among the most recommended there:

I wish the Times wouldn’t use euphemisms such as “breaks protocol”. He broke the law. As a former bank economist, I had to announced the unemployment numbers on the trading floor. I wasn’t allowed to crack a smile or make any indication of whether numbers were good or bad. The President’s tweet was basically touting what he saw as a good number, and it no doubt influenced the markets. Just one more drip-drip-drip as we erode — not protocol — but the rule of law.

He should be indicted. This is serious. There should be an investigation into whether he informed people last night. People who could benefit from the information. People like his family members. Everybody knows he can’t keep his mouth shut. Everybody also knows he would do anything to prop up the finances for himself and his family.

It’s not much of a protocol if you allow him to get away with it, just like him getting away with everything that he does.
